Juneathon Days 17 to 23

Whoops, I seem to have gone a week without updating everyone on my Juneathon exploits.  I could claim it’s because I’ve been so busy getting fitter by the second that I just haven’t had time to update you all, but I’m afraid it comes down to laziness on my part.  I haven’t been totally lazy however.

Day 17, I spent the day travelling around London visiting various TV and photo studios trying to find a suitable location to use for the new show I’m working on.  In between wandering around corridors, dashing to the tube, running for the bus and eating the jammie dodgers that one studio had very kindly gone out and bought especially for me to go with the cup of tea they offered me, I walked for about two hours in total, 30mins of that in go to the ‘nearest’ tube… a 30min walk is not “near”!  It’s not all glam in TV you know…

Day 18, I’m afraid I fell off the Juneathon wagon on Day 18.  My friend Debs (officially the 6th member of Coldplay – she’ll hate me for saying that but it is true) was in London to meet her publisher, do some Coldplay stuff, and catch up with a few friends, so we enjoyed a HUGE Nando’s lunch.  I did intend to walk home, or at least part of it, but ended up just about making it to the bus stop.  Oh dear!

Day 19, I didn’t fare much better on day 19.  I was chained to my desk all day, then had a bit of a family crisis to deal with in the evening, which turned out not to be a crisis at all but by the time I’d realised that it was dark and I couldn’t be bothered to find the hi-viz stuff to go for a plod.  I ordered a pizza instead.  Does walking to the phone to order it, and going to the front door to collect it count towards Juneathon?  No? Oh…

Day 20, One wander to the shops to get milk.  And lots of sofa duty.  Failed again!

Day 21, A more positive attitude, plus some sunshine got me up and about for gardening duty today.  Cut the grass, edged it as well, dug the back bit over to get the weeds out, planted some plants, then walked to the Tesco Metro to get salad for dinner – and that’s further away than the Sainsbury’s Local, so went out of my way for today’s Juneathon.  Yay me!

Day 22, Determined to bring this back to plodding which was the original plan for this blog, I managed a quick plod after work.  Only a super quick 15min, so nothing to shout about, but done none the less.  (I don’t have the distance details with me today, does round the block really count?,  but will update this all later, just in case anyone other than my conscience is paying attention).

Day 23, Finally the bike saddle has dried out, and sitting on it doesn’t result in a rather squelchy damp area that shouldn’t necessarily be squelchy or damp, so I found the hi-viz vest, strapped on my helmet and bicycled to work.  It is apparently 5.3miles via the cycle routes, plus i’ve got the return journey, so that will be 10.6miles by the end of the day.  Hooray.  I feel very virtuous, and rather smug at doing the first proper bit of exercise for ages.

Tomorrow I plan a plod in the morning as a friend has agreed to come with, which will be a nice change…. that’s is of course assuming I manage to get out of bed – hmmmm, we’ll see….

‘Till the next time…

Juneathon – Days 13, 14, 15 & 16

So the weekend was lovely – in the country with Ma & Pa, Sun, Wine, Laugher and plenty of rest.

Home

But I didn’t lose the Juneathon bug and managed some, although not necessarily usual, forms of exersize.  Here’s a quick recap…

Day 13 – Walked around a garden centre, bought a few plants, visited a local fare, helped take down a giant tent, moved lots of boxes of Christmas Decorations (yes, in the middle of June!) and ‘mooched’.  Probably not standard Juneathon activited, but none the less, knackering!

Day 14 – Did some gardening, helped clear the guttering, moved ladders, more gardening, and some sunbathing.  Well, it was Sunday!

Day 15 – Back to work, so more walking around.  I didn’t measure my walk, but probably an hour in total… but it was in small sessions.

Day 16 – Finally took my lovely bike in for it’s MOT.  Sadly the cover that was supposedly waterproof, wasn’t, so the saddle was very soggy (it’s got a sponge filling) so had to walk the bike!  Did 30mins speedy walk at lunch time (to John Lewis and back!)  Came home flopped in front of the telly.

So, officially, I’ve probably failed in the Juneathon tasks, as I haven’t done any plodding or proper planned exercise, but I’m keeping active, which is more than I used to do.  Anyway, hopefully the plodding will return soon…

Till the next time…

Juneathon – Days 10, 11 & 12

It’s official – I now have the sharpest elbows in London!  Having had to fight people for some pavement the last few days, what with the Tube strike n’ all, normal service has now been returned.  However, the strike meant that as expected, I’ve had to do a fair bit more walking that usual.  Wednesday (Day 10) I had to walk to and from work, 7.65km each way, so a total of 15.3km, then Thursday (Day 11) I just had to walk home having managed to have sharp enough elbows to garner my way onto a bus to get to work (even though it took just as long to travel by bus with all the extra traffic as it would have done if I’d walked!) so just 7.65km towards Juneathon.  Today (Day 12) was again another walk, because I had to stop off at Euston to pick up some train tickets for work, so decided to walk the rest of the way.  I’ve no idea how far in distance, but it took me 25mins, although I am wearing silly shoes that flop around a bit so I wasn’t exactly marching along…  I’m bored of walking now.

Not quite sure what the weekend will provide in terms of Juneathon as I’m off to the country for the weekend – to visit the Parentals…  probably more walking, as that’s what people do in the country!  However there won’t be any blogging as (a) I’ll be eating far too many of Mummy’s home cooked goodies to bother, (b) their computer still runs on batteries and they’ve never heard of broadband…   Roll on 6pm!

Have a good weekend everybody!

’till the next time…

Juneathon – Day 9

Todays’ exercise was going to be ‘leg free’ especially after yesterday floppy foot incident, however due to the members of the RMT Union deciding that despite the fact that we’re in the middle of a recession and that people are losing their jobs left right and centre and that those that do have jobs are having to fight tooth and nail to keep them they with their ‘not being selfish at all’ reasoning want a pay rise so they’ve gone on strike to get one.  Meanwhile, all of London comes to a standstill as there are now no tubes running and every bus stop has at least 893 people at it waiting for a bus.  So walking home seemed easier.  Therefore 7.65km goes towards todays Juneathon.  Unless there is some kind of miracle at the bus stop in the morning, I have a sneeky feeling that walking into work and home again may constitute tomorrows Juneathon activity too.  And the day after.  Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Juneathon – Day 8

OK, own up, who stole my good legs?

I have just attempted my first plod of week two in the Juneathon Challenge, only to find that I obviously have someone else’s legs on today, as mine don’t seem to work!   I thought I’d have a quickie in the park after work, only to be deflated a little over half way round by a flappy left foot.  That flappy left foot then caused the left ankle to join in in sympathy, before the calf decided to join the party and totally ruin my plan.

I stopped, had a little stretch, walked for a bit thinking that the flappy left foot would realise that it was about to be called a ‘cankle’ if it didn’t pull its sock up, however it stubbornly refused to play.  So I’ve half limped, half flappy slapped my way home.  I did manage 2.57k though.

A reward for the return of my good plodding legs has been offered…

Juneathon – Day 7

Today, being a Sunday, I decided that I would take it easy and do something that wasn’t plod related, and quite frankly I didn’t really fancy leaving the house, so decided to try something inside that I’ve not done before – Yoga.  Yoga

Some years ago I bought a DVD “Yoga for Dummies” but I’ve never actually tried it – yes, it was of those purchases that seems like a good idea at the time but actually was just a waste of money.   Now, I’ve only ever tried Yoga once before on a holiday, and found it really rather difficult.  Not only could I not get into any of the poses and found myself bobbing and wobbling all over the place trying not to fall over, but I continually forgot to breathe so ended up blue in the face too – hardly relaxing or therapeutic.

Anyway, with the threat of being called a Slacker if I didn’t do something today, the “Yoga for Dummies” DVD was dusted off and popped into the machine.  The Yoga Mat was found in the cellar, the curtains were closed to stop any nosy neighbours having a good laugh at my expense create a relaxing atmosphere, and I removed all furniture from the room that had a sharp corner, and got the oxygen mask ready…

All in all, it wasn’t too bad.  To be honest, the poses weren’t that strenuous or difficult, but I guess that’s what beginners Yoga is all about…  and with the helpful reminders from the lady on the DVD, I remembered to breathe!  Hmmm, I might do that DVD again… Hang on though, does that really make me a “Dummie”?  Actually, don’t answer that!

So, Day 7 – a nice and easy 45min Yoga practice with 12 basic poses.  Done.

Till the next time…  Namaste.

Juneathon – Day 6

Pathetic.  After yesterdays pretty wimpy plod, I thought I’d try for something a bit more impressive today.  But after getting up really late (and I mean really late) and making myself some delicious American Style Blueberry Pancakes with plenty of Maple Syrup, I then got caught up on the computer for several hours before being able to get out the door.

Blueberry Pancakes

Despite legs feeling rather heavy, I thought I’d make a start and see what happened.  Nothing.  That’s what happened.  Did the warm up, all OK. Started the plod proper which was OK-ish but I think I set off a bit too fast, which resulted in me slowing down, then slowing down some more eventually coming to such a slow plod that after 10 minutes it was better to just turn todays Juneathon activity into a walk.  So that’s what I’m including today.  A walk.  Like I said, pathetic.  Still, it was a 3.1k walk, and like they say at Tesco – Every Little Helps!

Till the next time…

Juneathon – Day 5

Work, home, run, done.

Feeling strangely tired today (after all the excitement of yesterday I expect) so decided to take things easy.  Started off this morning with what I hope will be my last trip to the Osteopath for a while.  Seems I’m all back in alignment, fighting fit and ready to go – horrah!

So, waddled into work and did what I had to do (which wasn’t very much luckily), jumped on the bus home, and went for a very quick plod.  I wasn’t really feeling up to much, plus there is the call of left over Chinese to munch on, so did a quick 2.86km / 1.78miles in 25.54 including walk warm-up and cool down.  Will attempt something more impressive over the weekend.  Right now, I’m heading for the sofa and remote control.

Till the next time…

Juneathon – Day 4

•4 June, 2009 • 5 Comments

Wow, what a day.  Seriously, what a day!  It has included voting, dashing, dancing, skipping, running,  jumping, walking, and deep breathing!  Let me explain…

After yesterdays wonderful assult on the world at silly o’clock, I decided to give myself a break this morning and not get up until the normal time.  However normal time still managed to be a bit late so I had to dash to the bus stop to make it to work on time…  whoops!  Anyway, at midday I received the best news I’ve had in two years (yes, two whole years) that my old flat that I’ve been trying (and rather annoyingly failing) to sell, had finally sold.  Exchanged and completed, money transferred, I never have to think about the blasted place again, SOLD!  I won’t go into the reasons that it’s taken two years, but just be warned if you are an Estate Agent, stay well clear of me for a while as you are not my favourite brand of lying cheating lying miserable lying lazy lying useless lying idiot lying with lots and lots of swear words that I can’t type here as children might be reading but include one that starts with the letter f and end in uckwit and another that starts with the letter w and ends in anker person right now!  Anyway, at the news that finally the place was no longer my responsiblity I jumped up from my desk and did the Snoopy dance

Snoopy Dancing

So overjoyed and relieved was I, that I then skipped to M&S to buy a celebratory cake for me and my colleagues (one of whom was also celebrating a birthday, so there was a valid excuse) which we gobbled joyously.

One thing I forgot however was that I still had all the keys to said flat, so had to run after work to the bus stop to get to the Estate Agent to hand them over, at which point I jumped for joy in the knowledge that I no longer had two mortgages and two sets of bills to pay, and decided to walk home, past my old flat to give it one final goodbye before letting out a deep breath of relief.  PHEW!  Oh, and I voted.

Anyway, I’ll be adding these various forms of exercise to my Juneathonometer™, (OK, voting might not count) although some of you more hard core Juneathoners, particularly the ones doing real stuff today like the Crisis Square Mile, may choose just to include my 2.38 mile walk home.  Whatever!!!

I’m going to celebrate now with a Chinese Takeaway…    Well, no-one said Juneathon had to be a calorie counting exercise too….!!!

’till the next time…

Juneathon – Day 3

•3 June, 2009 • 7 Comments

I really am not a morning person, as proven by Day 1 & 2 of Juneathon.  However today I did finally manage to push myself out of bed to attempt a plod before work.  Can’t say it was the best plod ever, but the fact that there was a gentle breeze, and that the dustbin men all said good morning to me as I lolloped past meant that it wasn’t quite as horrid as I had expected.

One thing I did notice was the amount of other people out there also plodding around…  I’ve usually done my plods late morning or after work, so this all came as a bit of a surprise.  Who knew there were so many other unfit plodders out there just like me?!  I felt like I was with ‘my’ people.  Oh, and Ninja Warrior Man was in the park too – haven’t seen him for ages!

All in all, a good plod.  Total distance – 3.55km  Time – 30.46  Walk / Plod Ratio – 5 walk, 10 plod, 3 walk, 10 plod, 2 walk.

Stokey & Park

‘Till the next time
